The crankshaft of a motorcycle is typically an assembly; if problems arise, the entire crankshaft must be replaced, as replacing only the bearings yields poor results.
The crankshaft of a motorcycle typically does not produce any noise, and if it does, the sound is usually a deep, muffled rumble that gives the impression the engine is about to fall apart—metallic knocking sounds are highly unlikely.
The crankshaft is a critical component of the engine. It receives forces transmitted from the connecting rods and converts them into torque, which it delivers to drive the engine’s auxiliary components. Subjected to the combined effects of centrifugal forces from rotating masses, cyclic gas‑inertia forces, and reciprocating inertia forces, the crankshaft experiences bending and torsional loads. Consequently, the crankshaft must possess adequate strength and stiffness, while its journal surfaces must exhibit wear resistance, ensure smooth operation, and maintain good balance.
