Function: The crankshaft converts the gas pressure transmitted from the piston–connecting rod assembly into torque for external power output. It also drives the engine’s valve‑timing mechanism and various auxiliary systems.
Crankshaft assembly: Main journal—used to support the crankshaft.
Full-bearing: The number of main journal bearings on the crankshaft is one more than the number of cylinders. This design offers superior strength and stiffness, reducing wear; it is used in diesel engines and most gasoline engines.
Non‑full‑bearing: The number of main journal bearings on the crankshaft is less than or equal to the number of cylinders. This results in higher loads and a shorter overall crankshaft length.
Crankshaft: It consists of a connecting‑rod journal, the two crankpins at its ends, and the main journals.
Common crankshaft damages include: surface scoring and scorching on the journal surfaces, as well as bending or torsional deformation, cracks, and even fracture.
